Movie Review - COVID-19 Lockdown Special (Part 5)

Here are more of the cinematic content I continued to consume between the last post and this one.

A Long Way Down (2014)

This movie is loosely based Nick Hornby's 2005 novel of the same name. New Year’s Eve is a favorite day for suicidal individuals to end their lives. The movie starts with a successful TV Host, Martin (Pierce Brosnan) about to commit the act at the roof of London’s tallest building. However, he meets 3 other suicidal individuals – single mum Maureen (Toni Collette), misunderstood politician’s daughter Jess (Imogen Poots) + seemingly lost American JJ (Aaron Paul) and they convinced each other not to do so and even made a pact to stick together thru each others’ tough times.

I really enjoyed this movie and the leads all delivered great performances. It shows that no matter your background or troubles that you face, others have worse than yours to overcome. We can make it thru’ when we truly care for each other. I will DEFINITELY watch it again. Yes, I recommend it.

Alien Autopsy (2006)
This is a humorous retelling of the 1995 scandal related to the infamous fake Roswell incident documentary The Alien Autopsy (1995). It starts off with the duo allowing a one-time-only exclusive interview with investigative journalist Morgan Banner (Bill Pullman) in a undisclosed location.
Always broke Londoners Ray Santilli (Declan Donnelly) and Gary Shoefield (Anthony McPartlin) goes to the US to find Elvis paraphernalia for resale. An ex-US Army cameraman, Harvey, sells them a silent B+W footage of Elvis' live performance. Harvey also offers to sell the only ORIGINAL film reel documenting the 1947 Roswell UFO alien autopsy for USD30k.
Gary + Ray return to England to look for the money from investors. Ray succeeds in convincing Laszlo Voros (Götz Otto), a rich but eccentric and violent Hungarian art dealer/gangster who's obsessed with all UFO related artefacts.

By the time they bought the film reel and return to London, they discover that the film reel has degraded so much that it now cannot be replayed. To avoid serious danger to their lives from Voros' anger, they decide to make their own film of the entire autopsy from what they had seen when Harvey first showed it to them.
It was my 1st time watching a movie with Ant & Dec (UK’s musical duo) acting in it. I must admit, I really enjoyed watching them on screen.

This movie was an ABSOLUTE DELIGHT to watch. It was funny, engaging and despite it being based on a true story, it's so comedic. Thanks in no small part to Ant & Dec's splendid performances. A MUST WATCH!

Burn Your Maps (2016)

This is a story of a 8-year-old American boy Wes (Jacob Tremblay), thinks he’s spiritually a Mongolian goat herder. Yeah, it’s  quite an extraordinary premise. So all his life, he’s obsessed with all things Mongolian. Their culture, history, names, language, food, etc. His mom Alise (Vera Farmiga), being in an unhappy marriage encourages Wes’ free spirit. Meanwhile, his dad, Connor (Marton Csokas) thinks that it’s merely a growing phase and that Wes’ll eventually grow out of it. 1 of Alise’s students, Ismail (Suraj Sharma), who has a dream of being a videographer, befriends Wes and encourages his Mongolian obsession. All of this leads to Alise brings Wes and Ismail (as a camera man) to Mongolia to fid his true self. This movie’s quirky premise made it quite a joy to watch. Jacob Tremblay + Suraj Sharma’s performances were a joy to behold. You are totally with Wes in his quest to find himself. It’s a feel-good movie that I'd watch again. If you are looking for a movie that brings you a sense of joy at the end, then this is for you. Recommended.

Clear History (2013)
A bearded + long-haired, brilliantly creative but obnoxious Nathan Flomm (Larry David) is a senior marketing associate of Will Haney (Jon Hamm), whose company is about to launch a new electric car - the Howard (named after Will Haney’s young son).
Flomm is vehemently against the car being named the Howard and quits from the firm. Flomm is vilified by the media for his error in judgment because if he hadn’t quit, he would’ve become a billionaire.
10 years later, Flomm (now known as Rolly) lives on an island with a clean shaven look, but Haney coincidentally re-enters his life as he settles there. Haney doesn’t recognize Flomm with his new look.
I have never seen Nathan Flomm (or if I did, I didn’t notice him) but this movie made me notice him. I quite like his acting. I didn’t expect myself to enjoy the movie this much as it’s just a B-grade TV-Movie. I would watch it again some years down the road.

Hardbodies (1984)
3 successful & wealthy middle aged guys come to the sunny California Beachside, rents a luxurious mansion + car with hopes that they could get some action with the hot beach girls.
However, they’re not getting the results as hoped. They notice a young & handsome beach bum Scotty (Grant Cramer) who seems to have all the right moves and scores with all the ladies.
They make an arrangement for their mutual benefit. Scotty teaches them how to score with the girls while he can live in their mansion, use their car and all the other perks as he chooses.
I suppose this could be the movie that started the Beach Hotties in skimpy Bikinis genre (Baywatch anyone?). I guess back in 1984, this might have achieved some kind of cult following. But In this day & age, this is just too clichéd and leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
My take. Don't bother. Just skip it.

Ready or Not (2019)
Grace (Samara Weaving) marries Daniel (Adam Brody), who is from an extremely wealthy family.
The wedding is held at the family’s massively large mansion (imagine Batman’s Wayne Manor). Steeped in it’s own eccentric and horrific traditions, a key part includes the new bride playing some extremely unusual “games” with the entire family. That’s when the “fun” begins.
In-Laws from hell would be a fitting description.
Samara Weaving looks a heck of a lot like Margot Robbie. I kept thinking Grace was Margot throughout the movie but not exactly. Something was off kilter. Then I discovered it was Samara Weaving.
Well, for many critics, this movie & premise is typical for its genre. It’s fairly predictable and you have no doubts that Grace would survive in the end. Despite these criticisms, I still find myself enjoying it quite a bit. I dare say I’d watch it again some years down the road. It’s not going to win any awards BUT it’s a heck or a fun ride.

Margot Robbie

Samara Weaving
Now who can honestly tell me you can tell who's who.

Rubin + Ed (1991)
Rubin Farr (Crispin Glover), a socially very awkward outcast twenty something who still lived with his mother in a family-owned motel. He dresses weird and has no friends except for his dead cat.
Forced by his mother to go out and make some friends, he meets Ed Tuttle (Howard Hesseman), a not so convincing or successful Multi-Level Salesman.
They were supposed to go for a Multi-Level Sales Seminar but end up lost in the desert of Utah while on a side quest to bury Rubin's frozen dead cat.
Crispin Glover - you either love him or you don't. He's like the weirder version of Johnny Depp. I had quite a lot of hope on him as he was in quite a number of big budget movies like Charlie's Angels (2000) & Willard (2003). Sadly, he's now hardly seen in any movies or TV series.
This movie is just too weird for me to recommend. You MAY want to watch it out of curiosity but for me, the enjoyment & entertainment factor just wasn't there. I won't watch this again, So how can I recommend that you watch this? Is it a bad movie, no. It's just not for everyone.

The Night Before (1988)
Winston Connelly (Keanu Reeves) a supposed school nerd, brings his dream girl in high school, head cheerleader Tara Mitchell (Lori Loughlin) to Prom Night.
Due to the highway being in a massive gridlock, Winston takes an alternative route but ends up being lost and ending up in the wrong part of LA.
SNAFU ensues and he finds himself faced with the situation where Tara was "sold" to a brothel and a gangster pimp Tito hunting him down for the money he "stole".
I have to admit that this movie would be fairly enjoyable IF I was watching it back in the 80s or 90s. But watching it today, it just looks dated as it hasn't aged as well as Keanu.

Watch it if you're into Retro Movies but most may find this to be rather just "meh".
