Food Review - Pork Rib Noodles (Chun Heong Coffee Shop)

Name
Pork Rib Noodles - Chun Heong Coffee Shop
Address
28 Lorong Ara Kiri 2, Lucky Garden
Food
Pork Rib Noodles (Lunch)
Location
Bangsar - Lucky Garden

Getting there
It is a double shop-lot right in the middle of the shops (instead of at a corner) located prominently across from the Jalan Tempinis-Jalan Ara Kiri Roundabout.

Parking
This can be a hassle as the parking spots are usually all taken and even double parked. This however is you do not mind parking slightly further away and taking a short walk from either Bangsar Village or the housing areas surrounding the place.

Service
Service is quick and fuss-free. The old lady is friendly and you she would enjoy recommending her menu to you if you are unsure of what to try.
Ambience
Typical of any Chinese Coffee Shop, the noise levels are pretty up there but the place is considered fairly clean (considering the shop has been there foe some years) and brightly lit.

Taste
The pork ribs are served in a clear double-boiled Chinese herbal broth which has a very tempting aroma. I like mine with dry Wantan noodles. However, the more traditional noodles like mee, hor fun (or kuey teow), mee-hoon and even mee-suah (or “meen seen” in Cantonese) are also available. I tend to look for some form of chili paste with my food but they only provide chili-padi in soy sauce. I didn’t really use it because the meat in the soup provides enough savory taste.

Presentation
The food is served in large decorated porcelain Chinese bowls (which is a very good thing not only presentation-wise but from the health perspective as well). If it’s the dry noodle variety, then the food will come in 2 bowls instead of one.

Variety
They also serve Duck & Chicken in herbal soup (all double-boiled) but I have not had a chance to try them as each time I visit, I always order the Pork Ribs (Yeah, it’s that good!).

Value for Money
Each serving comes with at least 4 big chunks of pork ribs complete with a generous portion of noodles.

Overall
Altho’ run only by a friendly elderly couple, their service (with a smile, put many other eateries to shame). Great food at great value with excellent service tucked somewhere in the heart of the city - Bangsar. Go try it, an excellent example of great stall food.

Food Review - Dynasty Restaurant @ Renaissance KL

Name
Dynasty @ Renaissance

FoodDim Sum (Non-Halal)
Location
Renaissance KL

Getting thereLocated at the cross-roads of Jalan Ampang and Jalan Sultan Ismail, a mere stone’s throw away from the KLCC Twin Towers, you can’t miss the landmark that is Renaissance Hotel.
Parking
There is ample parking at or around the hotel.
ServiceThe Dim Sum brunch is usually packed. So, diners are advised to make reservations before making a trip there.
Ambience
There are 2 sections to the restaurant – the 1 closer to the main entrance is more brightly lit & busier than the other area as the food is located in this area. Located further away from the entrance, is the much quieter and less brightly lit area – more suited to couples or diners with smaller groups/families. The soft furnishing helps to keep the noise level low, making it a very comfortable place to have Dim Sum. The China used all have the same beautiful signature art on them. This adds a lot to the ambience of the restaurant.
TasteThe difference here as compared with other hotels is that they have the steamed Dim Sum items on a menu and are freshly prepared for you per your orders instead of having everything on the Buffet Line. (However, having said that, the deep fried items are on the Buffet Line.) This is a very nice touch, makes it very reminiscent of dining at a real Dim Sum place and it ensures that all the Dim Sum items are served and eaten the way they should be – Fresh. I love the steamed Dim Sum here as they really taste heavenly!
Presentation
The Steamed items come in the traditional bamboo Dim Sum baskets while all the other items are in chaffing dishes on the Buffet Line.
VarietyThere are of course the standard items that MUST be present for Dim Sum:
- Siew Mai
- Char Siew Pau
- Har Gau
- Chee Cheong Fun (they have a novel variety where it is wrapped around a Yau Char Gwai)
- Porridge
- Glutinous Rice in Lotus Leaf

One other item I really loved was the Tau Foo Fa with Ginger Syrup. I have 4 servings of that and if I weren’t full, I would have had more!

Not only that, they also served the Longan and Honey Sea Coconut tong sui as well.
Value for Money
This is a good value for money Dim Sum dining experience as the food tastes great and each time I dined there, I always came away satisfied.
OverallIf you have not tried it yet, I suggest you do. It’s good food at good prices!

Food Review - Lilian Bak Kut Teh

NameLilian Bak Kut Teh
Food
Bak Kut Teh
Location
Klang – Nearby the Klang Jusco
Getting There
This is a tricky one because I am not entirely familiar with Klang. The landmark to look out for is the Jusco that is visible from the Federal Highway if you are entering Klang from KL. Once on the road that leads to Jusco, just follow the road until you pass Jusco on your left (with the Fed Hwy directly behind). The road is an anti-clockwise semi circle that leads back to the Fed Hwy. The restaurant is at a row of shops at a left turning just before the Fed Hwy.

ParkingAmple parking on the street in front of the restaurant.
Service
Service is warm and friendly as it is a family run business where you will be served by “uncles” and “aunties”.

Taste
The rice was fluffy and nicely done, not clumpy. The BKT and the soup was very fragrant- which makes it hard to resist. I personally prefer the non-clay-pot version because the flavors are stronger as there are no vegetables or Tau Pok, etc to “water down” the flavors. However, it is still very good BKT.
Ambience & PresentationIt is quite an old place but it is very well ventilated, kept and clean. A point to note is the way Chinese Tea is served because it is very different from how KL/PJ does it. The hot water re-fill kettle is placed on top of a gas tank right next to the guests’ tables where guests are expected to self-serve. Guests are given the clay tea-pot, traditional tiny tea cups and a small pot complete with a quaint little strainer for guests to filter out the tea leaves from the beverage.

Variety
The BKT is available in the standard clay-pot or non-clay-pot varieties. We ordered the clay-pot version with the works (ie: Mushrooms, lettuce, Foo Juk, Tau Pok, different parts, etc).

Rice is a must to go with the fragrant BKT soup. The rice comes in a plastic plate but there are condiments that are a must for the rice – the fried shallots! For added oomph, some like to add the black soy sauce, chili padi and chopped garlic to the meal.
Value for Money
Under RM50 for 2 pots of BKT with rice, vege and Chinese Tea. Go try it!
Overall
Good BKT. It’s not the best but Klang is after all BKT paradise. So, you can’t really go wrong. Good food at good prices in a quaint little place that serves up a dose of nostalgia.

Food Review - Hao Wei Dao

Name
Hao Wei Dao
Food
Fusion Food (Non-Halal)
Location
Taman Desa, Old Klang Road

Getting there
I would classify that there are 4 shop-lot clusters in Taman Desa:
- The cluster near the Hospital/Bomba (Fire Brigade)
- The cluster at Telekom Malaysia/Faber Towers
- The cluster near Danau Desa Police Station
- The cluster near Shell Station

This place is tucked neatly away in the newer area of shop lots near the Shell Station cluster, on the same row with Watson’s.
Parking
There are ample parking bays around the shop-lots.

Service
Service is rather quick. However, the menu simply has too many items. First time visitors may be overwhelmed by the selection available to them.

Ambience
The place is clean and brightly lit with a prominently placed red carpet to welcome guests as they walk in. The place is not too big. The seating arrangement is very open as they are all lined up straight but I find that a tad boring.
Taste
The items here taste simply fantastic! We ordered the Butter Garlic Pork Rib Rice and the Brinjal (Eggplant) Sliced Pork in Soy Bean Rice.
The Butter Garlic Pork Rib gravy that was smothered on the rice was thick and flavorful. They were very generous with it. As for the minced pork on brinjal, the taste was just right.

Presentation
The pictures speak for themselves. Very nice!
Variety
There are so many items on the menu that I would not be able to do it justice by trying to list them here but they can be broadly categorized into
- Rice
- Noodles
I think there are literally over a hundred menu items there!

Value for Money
Good value combined with good taste and variety! Definitely worth a visit or a re-visit.

Overall
What are you waiting for? Go out and try it already!
